Can George Russell Lift The Curse: Inside the 2026 British Grand Prix

Rami AfifComment

Before the start of the 2026 season, George Russell’s stock had been pushed heavily as the man to get behind the Mercedes wheel as Driver #1, as he has the necessary skills needed to bring them their first championship since Lewis Hamilton was behind the machine in 2020, a season that saw Russell fill in when Hamilton tested positive for COVID. Now, heading into the British Grand Prix of 2026, he will look to become the latest hero of his homeland to conquer Silverstone and lift the curse.

Mercedes did have the best engine at the end of a season, as McLaren took the reins. McLaren didn’t stop until the final couple races of the season had Lando Norris, another British star that has won at Silverstone, take the win in Great Britain to keep himself ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. Despite Verstappen being challenged to a tough 2026 season with the Red Bull ride so far, if a win is in his future sights, it can boost him to a top fourplacing for the year.

In 2022, Russell came into the British Grand Prix running hard tires, resulting in a scary accident with Zhou Guanyu where Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo was flipped on its head, Zhou walked away without any injuries. In 2023, Russell finished third, in 2024, he qualified first but had to retire due to his car having a water leak. Last season, he qualified fourth, but finished in tenth position, once again not being able to get a pole position, which has not kept his motivation down this season when he called Silverstone an amazing weekend and that it’s difficult because of that to treat it like a normal weekend for the 28-year-old Mercedes star.

Russell will walk into this upcoming weekend with two things on his mind: qualifying top three and making sure his teammate Kimi Antonelli does not find a way into pole position to make sure he gets himself closer with points to surpass the 19-year-old who replaced Hamilton and could be on his way to winning his first title in F1 in his sophomore year. Another big question that comes to mind are contract talks between both drivers, and how Toto Wolff can keep both their heads away from clashing too much this season. It’s imperative that neither lose focus on winning Mercedes the Drivers and Constructors Championship.

If Austria was the first sign of Russell being back in action, it should be a good one if he has his head on right and looks to make it an encore in his homeland. The top five standings still have Hamilton in the top three with Ferrari, and Norris in fifth place with a win inching him closer to surpassing Hamilton to try and repeat the season he had in 2025 where he was flawless for McLaren in Great Britain.

July is filled with the British, Belgium and Hungary Grand Prix races before a month long break begins. With the possibility that heads will roll with Mercedes looking to keep their egos in check, Hamilton could take advantage of their problems. More importantly, McLaren’s Norris and Oscar Piastri, plus Max Verstappen, who has begun to turn things around, could overcome their first half problems and prove to be a threat before the break.

It all begins with a busy 4th of July weekend with qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday to see if Formula One can crown their fourth different champion (Norris in 2025, Verstappen in 2023, Sainz in 2022) on the oldest track in the Formula One World Championship calendar with Russell and Antonelli fighting to be the perennial face of team Mercedes.
